

Grant Dickson (Bass)

After living and singing abroad since 1971, Grant Dickson returned to New Zealand in 2002 and is resident now in Auckland. Beginning with the NZ Opera Company in the 1960’s, Grant joined Opera Australia as principal bass from the opening performances at Sydney Opera House, becoming also over 20 years Australasia’s leading concert and oratorio bass. Since 1991 he worked almost entirely in Europe, appearing for example at Dresden Semperoper, Paris Bastille, Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Grande Opéra de Genève, Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam, Welsh National Opera, English National Opera and the Royal Opera Covent Garden. His more than 80 opera roles have included Commendatore DON GIOVANNI, Il Grande Inquisitore DON CARLO, Sarastro MAGIC FLUTE, Dansker BILLY BUDD, König Marke TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, Daland DER FLIEGENDE HOLLÄNDER, Pimen and Boris BORIS GODUNOV, Schigolch LULU, Padre Guardiano FORZA DEL DESTINO, Zaccaria NABUCCO, DON PASQUALE, Baron Ochs DER ROSENKAVALIER. While abroad Grant visited NZ for opera and oratorio and to give master classes and workshops at the universities. Known wherever he sings as an inspiring and revolutionary vocal teacher, he is frequently approached by fellow soloists for therapeutic and developmental tuition, and he runs a select studio in Auckland.
