01 CREATION

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death with his masterpiece The Creation. First heard in 1798,The Creation was Haydn’s response to the great English oratorio tradition that he had encountered in London. Haydn poured a lifetime’s experience into the work’s composition and prayed each morning on bended knees for inspiration worthy of its monumental theme. Each part of the biblical story is brilliantly depicted in music, from the chilling emptiness of the void to billowing oceans and all forms of life. Even the worm, with sinuous trace, has his place in this magnificent work. For all its profundity, Haydn’s sense of humour is never far from the surface and his love of life and the natural world can be heard in every aria and thrilling chorus.

For this performance we welcome soloists Pepe Becker from Wellington and Kenneth Cornish of Auckland. Joining them, direct from London, is James Harrison, last heard in Opera NZ’s 2008 production of Hansel and Gretel and in Messiah with Auckland Choral in 2007.

02 GLORIA

Rupert D’Cruze, formerly of England and now resident in Hamilton, will be the guest conductor for this concert. He will conduct the rhythmic and exciting Gloria, a widely admired work and one for which the popular British composer John Rutter is probably best-known. Alongside this well-known contemporary piece, we present the New Zealand premiere of the Mass by Belgium composer Joseph Jongen (1873-1953). Jongen’s work for choir, brass and organ is described as “glorious and radiant”. Premiered at the end of World War II this mass fell into obscurity until it was rediscovered with acclaim in the 1980s. The programme returns to the splendour of the Baroque by finishing with Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks.

04 AMADEUS

The sacred music of Haydn, Mozart and Hummel was the finest of its time, remarkable both for its exquisite vocal writing and brilliant orchestration. Haydn and Mozart were close friends and greatly admired one another’s music. Hummel was Mozart’s star pupil and later succeeded Haydn, on his recommendation, as Kapellmeister to Prince Esterházy. This fascinating programme features Haydn’s turbulent sacred chorus Insanae et vanae curae (Insane and idle cares), completed in 1797 during the composition of The Creation, Mozart’s Coronation Mass (1779), the most beautiful and impressive of the masses he composed in Salzburg and Hummel’s magnificent Missa Solemnis in C (1806), composed for the wedding of Princess Esterházy. The Missa Solemnis, one of the greatest successors to the late Haydn masses, remained completely unknown until Uwe Grodd made his acclaimed recording for Naxos. This is your chance to hear the first ever live performance of the work in New Zealand. Four top soloists join Auckland Choral for this feast of classical music.
