2010 SUBSCRIPTION SERIES
Pese Muamua means ‘song number one’. The choir will call ‘mua mua mua’— let's begin, let's begin, let's begin — the words which are used in traditional Samoan singing to introduce a set of songs. This symbolises the beginning of all the ‘songs’ Auckland Choral will sing in 2010. A wonderful, varied one-hour FREE concert follows with excerpts from Brahms's Requiem, Bach's B minor Mass and even a Sing Along ‘Hallelujah’ from the Messiah. Concert highlights include Dean Sky Lucas, Australia's finest counter tenor, David Hamilton's Dance Song to the Creator and Bach’s sparkling Brandenburg Concerto No. 4.

Of his greatest choral masterwork, A German Requiem, Johannes Brahms wrote: “As for the title, I must admit I should like to leave out the word ‘German’ and refer instead to ‘Humanity’.” Written as a memorial to Brahms’s mother, the German Requiem is a work of great beauty which transcends religion and instead offers in its profound humanism, comfort and consolation to the grieving. The concert opens with a new piano concerto by Dunedin-based composer Anthony Ritchie which is bursting with rhythmic vitality and a sense of adventure.

03 BEETHOVEN ODE TO JOY - Symphony No 9 "Choral"
Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 broke all boundaries when it was written by introducing singers into an orchestral work. Now it is one of the most famous pieces in the world. The first concert in the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra’s Splendour of Vienna Series sees Auckland Choral join the APO to bring this great work to Auckland for the first time in more than five years. The programme also features Schoenberg’s deeply moving A Survivor from Warsaw, which, like Beethoven’s symphony, is a tribute to the human spirit.

Bach’s B Minor Mass, written over a period of 25 years, marks the pinnacle of his achievement as a composer of choral music. The work embraces a variety of musical styles in its epic progress from the majestic opening Kyrie to the final gripping Dona nobis pacem fugue. Along the way we encounter virtuoso arias, great ceremonial choruses and music unmatched in its richness and complexity in the entire history of Western music. Auckland Choral combines with Musica Sacra and a team of specialist soloists to create the most spine-tingling choral experience of the year.
