02 FAURÉ REQUIEM

The Journey was commissioned from Leonie Holmes for the Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s first performance in the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, Manukau, in 2005. The inspiration comes from the two texts used – a traditional Maori blessing, and a text by Tessa Stephens focusing on the themes of connection and togetherness. We feature 200 singers on stage as The Music Association of Auckland choir, who sang at the first performance, join us. A special journey not to be missed. Commissioned by the Manukau Symphony Orchestra, Robin Toan’s Sinfonia Concertante will have it’s world premiere. Toan is one of New Zealand’s leading young composers, with her works gaining international attention and awards. A perennially favourite choral work is Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. This beautiful setting of the Mass uses sumptuous colours and beguiling orchestration to transfix the listener. At the centre is its most famous movement, the sublime soprano aria “Pie Jesu." Also part of the programme is Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine to complete this assortment of music that is, The Journey.

03 MOZART REQUIEM

Mozart’s Requiem comes veiled in mystery and evokes in the listener a sense of wonder at the brilliance of its creator. The Requiem combines the luminous beauty of his last opera, The Magic Flute, with the stern solemnity of the great Viennese church music tradition. No Judgment Day has ever evoked a greater sense of terror nor have the grieving been afforded such consolation. Mozart began the work as the greatest composer of his time and left it incomplete as an immortal. Headlining this celebration of Mozart’s music are international soloists Susanna Risch, soprano from Germany and Lin Chung Guang, baritone from Taiwan. Joining them are Sarah Court and Kenneth Cornish, with Italian pianist Matteo Napoli and Emma Richards, horn.

EVENT 01 ODES TO JOY: BEETHOVEN 9TH SYMPHONY "CHORAL" *

Experience REVOLUTION with the NZSO.

New Zealand’s proud tradition of producing great voices continues into the next generation, and four of our modern greats are assembled here to perform the magnificent Ode to Joy. Beethoven’s intensely emotional expression of hope for mankind is the apotheosis of Romantic optimism, a work which your soul needs to hear to gain replenishment and exhilaration. It is paired with a specially-commissioned new work by Gareth Farr, revered among today’s composers for his ability to conjure spectacular and magical sound-worlds. An evening of uplifting music you won’t want to miss.

“. . . on a sudden, like the fleeting pleasures of life, or the spirited young adventurer, who would fly from ease and comfort at home to the inhospitable shores of New Zealand, we are snatched away from such eloquent music, to crude, wild and extraneous harmonies” The Quarterly Musical Magazine & Review - 1825, 1st British performance of Beethoven’s 9th symphony.
